2001 Volkswagen Beetle: What is the red LED light by the drivers door lock do?

I just bought a 2001 VW New Beetle and I noticed that there is a blinking red LED light on the drivers side door next to the lock pin. I can’t find online, or in the manual, anything about this. What is it for?

    Flashing red light = VW protection. It means that your car is locked, and any attempt to start the vehicle will set off the alarm. (Try sitting in your car, lock the doors, and then start it. See what happens! To turn off your alarm, unlock the doors.)
