Can an aircooled Vw over heat?

I know that the older Vw’s dont have a radiator because their cooled by air. I want to get an older vw for my first car, but im tired of my family making fun of it. My family said that an older Volkswagen will over heat if I drive from La Habra thrue the Arizona dessert. I tell them its aircooled and wont overheat, but my mom’s boyfriend says they still can.

they can if you let them run without moving for long periods (over ten minutes).my uncle worked on them and he said they are basically impossible to stop.just get one in good to excellent condition.and make sure the owner didnt mickey mouse anything so you get stuck.

    Its possible but unlikely.

If the engine was left to run and the car was stationary then the running of it could eventually be effected. Even if it does overheat, the effects of that won`t be anywhere near as severe as with a liquid cooled car.

That’s why the VW Beetle was the first car to operate in Antarctica and the first to cross the Sahara. They operate well in all climates as they don`t need a complex cooling system to keep them running.

they cant set in one place for a long time the have to have air flow and as far as the dessert as long as you are moving it will be fine

they still have a huge fan on them but as long as you don’t idle in 120 degree heat for over ten minutes you’ll be fine. those aircooled engines are almost unstoppable. I have a 70′s Karmann Ghia and was able to rebuild the engine in under a week and it runs smoothly =]

if the sheet metal is in proper position and seals are good it is very unusual for the air bug to over heat, the timing could be very high, or debris could get in cooling fan… I first started building air cooled German cars in 1959 over the years I have driven up and down the East Coast and from Savannah to L.A. on many occasions it could happen but as of now no overheating
