Hey its me again…1996 volkswagen golf gl guy…. thanks for all the suggestions but I think I need some more basic opinions. I’m tryna sponge up all the info I can about my car, (being that this is my first) and I got about 1000 I can put toward my cars proformance. So wat I’m tryna say is what are the very BASIC things I can do for horsepower. A beginners list of sorts is wat I’m looking for. ” car proformance for dummies…thanks

Get a cold air intake, headers, and a decent cat back exhaust. That stuff wont make very huge improvements but its a good start.

I’m not very knowledgeable of the Volkswagen aftermarket selection but here are a few general things you can do that are basic.
    - Cold Air Intake. Generics can be as cheap as $70
    - Exhaust options. You can get a new exhaust system with a new muffler, piping, etc. or you can just run straight open which will give you a few HPs.
-Engine control modules ECMs can help out with increasing power.

I suggest you look at sites that sell aftermarket parts for your car for more ideas.

if you want more horse power, you should buy more horses. they cost a little more than $1000 though, sorry.

Ryan, think of your engine as an air pump. The less restriction the better. Change the air filter to a cold air induction type. Check K&N. Next I would look into a new exhaust system. Headers and a cat back exhaust. These two modifications should give you a boost in the hp. You will also have to have your computer (ecm) programed to accommodate the new upgrades. Check out a VW performance web site.

    Goo Luck,

Best bang for the buck “Spray it with a Zex Nitrous Kit” Your motor is an fancy air pump. It does well to help it breathe with a cold air intake and exhaust upgrades to improve flow. Under drive pullies reduce parasitic losses from alternators and pumps. A performance chip from jet or someone might also work.

Don’t spend your money on a cold air, especially if it’s not true cold air, and anyways it would only add about 5-10 horses, not that much, just chip it or turbo, or just have the engine reworked, have it tuned.
