I need some advice on bargaining with a car dealership?

I will be going soon to purchase a car. I have decided I want a 2002 Volkswagen Golf because that is the best I can afford. I want to get a good deal so I plan on bargaining. I have never bought from a dealership before so I need some help with the lingo. Is it correct to say something like, “I’ll give you $4000 cash out the door, tax, tag and title.”? Does that mean they will register the car for me? Then all I have to pay for is insurance right?
What do you mean by checked out thoroughly? I will be bringing my best friends uncle who works on Volkswagens along with my Dad.
VW is my favorite brand over. I’ve had a 1972 VW Bug since I was 19 and I am 27 now. I am good at repairing them and it is a great brand. I will look into the 1998-2004 thing though. Thanks for the heads up.

That’s what would happen if they accept your offer. The out the door price would include all taxes and fees. Make sure you get the chosen vehicle checked out thoroughly before you commit to buy. What I mean is make sure it is mechanically sound and in good condition. It is always advisable to have a shop check the vehicle for condition and any potential problems.

that’s the right idea. wether or not they accept is another story.

but why a VW? they are ca ca… especially those years. CR rated them ‘cars to avoid’ every year from 98-04 because of the high volume and cost of repairs to those years.

you can afford other more reliable cars for that moeny

There are a lot of cars you can find in that price range. If you’re set on a VW, make sure it’s a Germany assembled VW vs. Mexico assembled VW. Apparently, that’s where the quality issues lie.

I would go on http://www.easyautosales.com/car-search and find the VW’s near you in that price range and check the CARFAX reports to make sure that the car hasn’t been in previous wrecks. I’m not 100% certain but I think the VIN and the CARFAX reports may be able to tell you where the car was assembled as well – Germany vs. Mexico.

not all dealerships tag cars. but yes, if they say $4,000 out the door , tax, tag, title, then yes that includes everything. And you would need proof of insurance to even drive it off the lot. I have a 2000 VW bug and I love my bug, but I would never buy one from a dealer. they know nothing about the car, unless all they sell is VW….And they know nothing about the cars history, proper oil changes, any recent minor repairs? An individual seller would have all the answers for you, and it might be cheaper since they wouldn’t be working off commission. Don’t over pay. Check Craigslist.org, Select your state and city (Check surrounding citys as well) and see what they are selling for, not what they are worth!
