a VW engine that has been rebuilt totally is very reliable. However, there have been a few that opted for a Porsche engine is get that added preformance. Something you may want check on. Any “front” engine will not fit as a “rear” installation.

You cannot use a Toyota power plant.
The design is so totally different.
A Volkswagen motor is a reliable beast.
A Porsche motor is a drop-in proposition – was actually factory installed in some (1979 Wolfsburg Edition, for one).

Yes .Ive put a 600hp small block in a VW bug. with a cutting tourch, a good fabricator, and enough money you can build it any way you want. In street roding you may have parts from 10 different cars in one creation. Something like the chevy 4.3 liter 700R combo would give you some kicking power (for the bus that is) with reliability and cost effectiveness.
