My car is alot slower now? | Volkswagen FAQ

My car is alot slower now?

I have got MK3 Volkswagen Golf 1.8i SE 90bhp, I haven’t driven it since November and I normally can get to 120mph no problem at all. Now my car is struggling getting to 70mph.

When I put my foot on gas I can feel the engine’s power goes on and off felt like I’m lifting the petal off and putting it back on but I wasn’t.

Any idea what is wrong with it? I have checked air filter and air intake its all perfect and have replaced Intermidiate flange which was damaged but its still the same. It has got injection.

Its annoying for me as it cost me alot money for fuel as I had to put my foot down most of the time and using up fuel.

Thanks

p.s there is possible that someone has been playing with my car as it was in the garage for respray and the job was poor.
And it doest response well when I press the pedal
Thank you for ya’ll answers and I will try and fix the problems of what ya’ll reckon it was.

Will update once I have found the answer
One more symptom I do have black smoke coming out of my exhaust too even after I drove after couple of hundred miles

Since you haven’t driven it since November, it could be that
the gas in your tank has gone and or you have water in the
tank. Change your fuel filter and drain your gas tank, fill up
    with fresh gas.

if you haven’t driven it since November, you probably have gas problems, maybe old gas ,maybe rust deposit from your gas, maybe water in gas tank from condensation, also the gas with 10% eethanol starts to separate after 90 days, change your gas filter and get some new gas ,hope that helps.

You don’t say what your mileage is but you might want to check your timing chain. They can give you a response like you describe and they can happen without warning and without other symptoms but when they go bad they cause you to lose a lot of power and you feel like your car cannot get its breath..

Bad gas will not only perform poorly, but your engines computer will retard the timing to compensate and make it seem even worse. Also if you have a bad knock sensor the same symptoms will occur.
