What should I do?

For a while now, my dad and I have been planning on buying car that I can use. The car I had in mind was a Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk4. Those are roughly $15,000-$18,000, which is affordable for normal people. But I was just showing my dad a few pictures of other cars that I think are nice. I showed him 2006/2007 the Jetta GLI. He was really into that. I told him that it was roughly, $24,000. I know that is a lot of money (atleast for me and my families budget.) I do think it is a nice car but, I’m not so much of fan of sedans. If that’s the case, being a guy into GTI’s I showed him the GTI Mk5. I told him it’s a few thousand cheaper. He said he didn’t like the shape of it. What does it matter to him? He lives in Vegas. I’m in LA. So we actually went down to the dealership to look around. Saw a few things I liked. But standing next to the GTI Mk5 and sitting in the Mk4, I felt like that was the closest I’ll ever get to them. There must be some way for me to convince him.

You can get just about any car pre-owned for thousands cheeper, a much better deal as cars depreciate in value quickly over the first few years. since your young you will probably tear up your first car either in an unexpected fender bender or out joy riding it.
if your dad’s buying you a car at least appreciate the effort and expense he’s putting towards getting you a car, think of what he could buy for the thousands spent on a car.

and to convince him possibly get a part time job and put some money towards it, also talk to him about price as he and you probably have 2 completly diffrent views on the cost he is willing to spend towards the car.

15-18,000 for a MK 4 ouch that seems a bit high.

So you are bummed because daddy is going to schill 24 large for a Jetta GLI instead of less for a GTI.

You could let him know that the GTI is active accident avoidance. Good Brakes, Good Turning, Good Acceleration – all to keep you from having an avoidable accident.

I got an old 95 Neon for my son and then we tricked the suspension, brakes, and tires out to make it handle like it was on rails. He whines for more power and I tell him learn to drive for 4-5 years before adding power!

Truthfully the only thing a GTI offers is a “Close Ratio gearbox” and on MK 4 you don’t even know if it will have that(some didn’t) If The ones you look at don’t shift like a motorcycle take a pass as you aren’t getting the real GTI experience anyway.
I was shocked when I found out that they sold MK II, III, and IV GTI’s with the economy gearbox. Just made me sick.
