For VW Jettas and Golfs, 1999 was a split year. Meaning there were actually 2 versions of these cars available for sale. The early production 1999 versions are usually referred to as A3 bodies and except for very minor changes identical to 1998 models. They were mostly equipped with VW’s reliable 2.0L (engine code ABA) some VR6 and diesel models were also available. The later production 1999 models, are usually referred to as A4 bodies, and except for some very minor changes identical to the 2000 models. They were largely equipped with a new 2.0L (engine code AEG) , as well as VR6 and diesel versions. A new 1.8L turbo was also available in late production runs.
